Adoption creates doubts and questions for birth parents that just won’t go away. Where is my child? Did I do the right thing by giving him/her up? What does s/he look like now? Would we know each other if we passed on the street? With questions such as these you will most likely only frustrate the situation by trying to search your loved one out on your own. The trained professionals at ICS have resources that allow us to find quickly the information you need to pursue getting to know your child.
Why spend endless hours searching inaccessible and incomplete databases to find a small bit of information if any at all? Hiring ICS to locate your child will provide you with as much information as you need. Let us find the name, address, employment history, marital status, and so much more. We can even go as far as providing you with a detailed report on daily activities and pictures! Whether or not you choose to reintroduce yourself into their lives, sometimes it is enough to know that they are healthy, happy and to see what kind of person they have grown into. We will collect the information discretely and leave it to your discretion to make the choice whether or not to contact them in your own time.
Although finding the person or family you lost because of adoption is an arduous and time-consuming process to pursue on your own. If you wish to attempt to find them, here are five steps you can to take before making a significant financial investment in the search.
- Adoption Reunion Registries: Adoption search and support groups, and some U. S. States, maintain adoption registries that can be searched free of charge. In order to use a registry database you will need information such as the lost person’s name and other identifying information, including the date of birth, hospital where born, and physical description. After entering your information into the database, a search occurs which attempts to match your information with someone else that has entered like information. In order for registries to work both parties must be registered and actively engaged in finding each other.
- Research State Adoption Laws: Although federal laws exist that govern the release of adoption information, each state also has its own laws that may restrict or promote access to records. Depending on when and where an adoption took place, records of the event may be either opened or sealed. Minor children are protected in all states, so if the person you are trying to locate is under age 18 it is likely that you will not be able to access the information you seek.
- Join an Adoption Support Group: Seeking a person lost to you through adoption is an emotionally charged experience. Becoming a member of a support group will provide you with the opportunity to communicate with others who understand how you feel, and it will make you part of an information network. Others who are searching might run across information you need, and will forward it to you. ICS can also assist in this process.
- Genealogical Search: Tracing a family history is one means of locating missing family members. The Church of the Latter Day Saints has the largest, predominately free database in the world that archives family histories. A full staff of professional genealogists is also available to assist you with your search.
- Adoption Agency: The private or governmental agency that handled the adoption may be willing to release information to an inquiring party. Agencies are restricted, however, by State and Federal law, as well as their own policies and protocols concerning how much, and what kind of information they are willing release.
If searching these five avenues proves fruitless, there are a number of other options available to you, but they all come with a price tag. You can hire an attorney, an intermediary, a consultant, or a private investigator to help you locate your missing family member(s). ICS Private investigators do not just view these cases as jobs but pursue them with true passion. The team at ICS is particularly knowledgeable about all aspects of “people search,” and will look determinedly for information in places that those focused strictly on “adoption investigation” might ignore. The databases that we have access to span far greater than the capabilities of other, smaller companies. Using the creative approaches of our investigators can shorten your search, and be less costly in the end than conducting the search on your own, or using an adoption-oriented expert. These “experts” may be specialized in their field but that also very definitely limits their searches and capabilities in finding your loved ones. Have your questions answered sooner and with more details by hiring an ICS investigator who is passionately dedicated to finding the answers you seek as soon as possible.
